Iron has always been a symbol of safety in Minecraft. Iron armor is a lot better than every other kind, save for diamonds, but the latter is just so much more expensive than iron is often more practical. Iron doors stop zombies from busting into homes, even when the game is set to Hardcore mode, and they would normally rip right through wooden doors. This sense of iron being safe also extends to the Iron Chests mod, which adds new metal chests to Minecraft. It’s important to note there are actually several new chests, not just the ones made from iron.

Also, because the Iron Chests mod was developed using the latest Minecraft versions, you must use that version of the game client if you want the mod to work correctly. If you don’t, chests may not build, or interacting with them in any way may cause your game to crash out. Many errors have been reported, but they all relate back to people using the wrong Minecraft game client version, so to save yourself a lot of trouble and grief, just make sure you’re using Minecraft 1.19.3 or an older version before you try installing this mod or using it in a world.

Now, you can make chests with iron, gold, diamonds, and even dirt; none of the chests have any unique characteristics or abilities, though. This mod is literally just a cosmetic thing, adding a few new faces for treasure chests and giving players one more use for the stockpile of metals they may have on worlds where they’ve already done a ton of exploring and digging. Regardless of the metal used to make the chest, all the new chests are just as fragile as the classic wooden ones, so I don’t think you could build a wall of these to stop creeper explosions or TNT cannons. You’ll just lose everything you’ve stored.

With all that said, if you’re looking for a mod that adds new chests to Minecraft, the Iron Chests mod won’t disappoint. On the other hand, if you’re looking for increased function from those chests, you’re going to be a bit disappointed by this mod. There are other specialty items, too, of course, like the crescent hammer you use to turn the new metal chests once you’ve placed them, but there’s nothing here regarding new content. For what it does, this mod is solid, though it does leave something to be desired for many users.
